Case Materials Society
The Case Materials Society is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.
We are an umbrella organization that is divided into the Undergraduate Materials Society (UMS) and the Graduate Materials Society (GMS).
We are also the local chapter of ASM International,The Materials Society (TMS), the American Ceramics Society (ACerS), the Materials Research Society (MRS), and the American Foundry Society (AFS).
The growth and excitement of the field of materials is reflected in the accomplishments of CWRU's award-winning Undergraduate Materials Society. All undergraduate students are members of this organization, which has an annual budget and has a representative on the Case Engineer's Council (CEC). Run entirely by undergraduate students, UMS organizes professional development programs and social activities. The highlight of the year is the annual trip to the joint TMS-ASM Fall meeting, Materials Week. Recent awards received by the CWRU-UMS, competing against similar organizations throughout the country, include the TMS Chapter of Excellence and the ASM Enhancement of Technical Awareness Award.
The Graduate Materials Society
Every Friday, the Graduate Materials Society what is traditionally called Materials Lunch. One member of the society caters to the crowd of fifteen to twenty students, staff, and faculty. The Graduate Materials Society also acts as an umbrella organization for involvement of the graduate students with the aforementioned professional societies. It's other motivation for existence to get the grad students to occasionally lighten up and have a good time.
